The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
