One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

Summers commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate following their development".

The prominent academic, who previously presided over Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his association with Epstein.

The recently released emails showed that the official communicated with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 arrest for alleged sex trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it accepted his choice to step down.

"We value his significant contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the Board," the company stated.

Political Context

This development follows after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will subsequently proceed to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has stated he intends to endorse the measure, after reversing his view on the issue following objections from his followers.

A group of Epstein-connected messages disclosed by the House Oversight Committee days ago included several well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without implying any illegal behavior by those people.

The emails indicated that the economist and the financier often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to link the official to influential global figures.

After the correspondence were shared with the public, Summers stated he assumed "full responsibility for my poor choice to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to rebuild trust and repair connections with the persons closest to me".

Career Background

Summers occupied senior posts under party leaders; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under the former leader.

He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When stating his departure from public commitments earlier on this week, he stated he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in DC where he was a senior fellow, announced that he was ceased to be affiliated with the group.

The former official joined the leadership of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
