Line of Duty Announced for 7th Season on BBC
The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.
A brand new six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."
The last season concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came this week.
Fresh Obstacles for AC-12
Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."
New Character and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.
Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had countless followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.
Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."
"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
Show History
Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.
The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.
The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.
Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
