Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.
Historic Return to Melbourne Park
Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Australian Summer
The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.
Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Venus said. "I have experienced so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a place that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the primary tournament field.
Establishing a New Record
The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to compete in an Australian Open main draw, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.

In late December, Williams married Denmark-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
