The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
