The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five starts.

When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 last-16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the first team and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," said the player following his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He is extremely energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.

According to international regulations, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official full international.

He has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the two-one win at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team chase trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the success at Manchester.
