UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate personas, each with their own fears and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate church.
A World of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers where their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
