For much of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned in a realm of memories forged from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a moment that could contain the secret to his downfall for good.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

After locating Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a telescope taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the event wasn't just a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who returned in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to sell to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their parallel research. The man in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is revealed about his research, the case most likely held samples of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would genetically impart to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the container could have held strange particles that later made its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that the boy was transported in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the whispers of a sinister presence, much like how Will was possessed by the shadow monster in season 2.

Confronting Terror

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the event was for him. Even as he controls the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to gain strength.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
